What is an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Ultrasound?

The abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) ultrasound is an ultrasound of the aorta - which is the main artery leaving the heart and supplying the blood to the abdomen, pelvis and legs. This test is used to visually show the presence of an aneurysm (which is an abnormal swelling or dilation of the artery walls). The ultrasound used is similar to the test doctors perform to monitor a fetus in pregnant women, so it is completely safe. The danger lies in the risk of the aneurysm bursting or rupturing. Ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms have a greater than 90% mortality rate, which makes this test essential in maintaining proper preventative health care. Early detection is the key for successful treatment.

What is this Test for?

The abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) ultrasound is used to detect any sign of an aneurysm before further complications are given the chance to develop. Using the ultrasound method is very effective in detecting this serious condition. This simple and painless test uses sound waves to create a picture of the inside of the body. It shows the size of an aneurysm, if one is detected.

How do I know if I’m at risk?

You may be at risk for an abdominal aortic aneurysm if you have any of the following behavior and health patterns:

  • Smoking
  • A high-fat, high-cholesterol diet that adds to the buildup of plaque in the arteries
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Slight and/or limited physical activity and exercise
  • Deep penetrating pain in your back or to the side of your abdomen
  • Steady, direct pain in your abdomen that lasts for hours or days at a time
  • Coldness, numbness, or tingling in your feet
  • How often should I get this test?

  • The ultrasound scan may be repeated every few months to see how quickly an aneurysm is growing. If the diameter of the aorta is small [less than 3 centimeters (cm)] and there are no symptoms, a follow-up screening in 5 to 10 years may be all that is needed.
  • If the aorta is between 3 and 4 cm in diameter, the patient should return to the doctor every year for an ultrasound to see if the aneurysm has grown.
  • If the aorta is between 4 and 4.5 cm, testing should be repeated every 6 months.
  • If the aorta is larger than 5 cm (2 inches around or about the size of a lemon) or growing more than 1 cm per year, surgery should be considered as soon as possible.
  • What should you expect?

Preparing for your screening is simple. We offer some helpful guidelines and our videos will help you understand what will happen so you can see that our screenings are pleasant experiences and something to look forward to. Our technicians are friendly and professional, and our screenings are painless - even our blood screenings, as they only require a quick finger prick. Some commonly asked questions are answered in the information below.

  • Do NOT wear turtlenecks.
  • Do NOT wear pantyhose.

  • What happens during my test?

  • The room will be dimly lit.
  • You will undress from the waist up (women will be given a gown to wear).
  • If needed, you will be helped to be lifted atop the examining table.
  • You will lie on your back.
  • The ultrasound technician will apply a small amount of gel on your abdominal area.
  • A non-invasive ultrasound probe will be used to obtain multiple images of your abdominal area.
  • What equipment will be used?

    "Ascending Aortic Aneurysm"

We want to let everyone know that the services that are offered through HealthFair proved to be invaluable to his life. We were happy that the price for that valuable checkup was also affordable for the average person. Go get checked! It may save YOUR life too!"

"Diagnosing me in 2006 with mitral valve prolapse"

I just wanted to belatedly thank your company for diagnosing me in 2006 with mitral valve prolapse and regurgitation. I was 50 at the time and had begun to notice much more than usual fatigue. My husband and I were having coffee on Sunday morning, saw your ad, and he urged me to go. I did and your simple echocardiogram of my heart showed the problem. I was at the cardiologist within a month and had the valve repaired 4 months later. Otherwise, I would have had congestive heart failure. So - thank you. I tell all of my friends your service is worth every penny.

    "HealthFair saved my husband's life!"

"Every doctor and nurse that saw Delbert said that HealthFair had saved his life. They could not believe that we found his aneurysm at a HealthFair! For less than $200 you saved his life!"

"Your 7 test package was truly an investment in my health."

"A few months ago, I reluctantly responded to a flyer in my local newspaper for stroke and aneurysm screening. One week later and to my surprise, the screening showed a 90 percent blockage in my carotid arteries, making me a prime candidate for a debilitating or deadly stroke. As a result, I had surgery and am fully on my way to recovery and good health. My wish is that my experience will encourage others to have the same early detection tests."

    E. K.

"HealthFair Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm testing saved my life!"

"On Tuesday, July 20th, 2004, I went in for HealthFair's seven-test ultrasound package in Richmond, Virginia. From the moment I arrived, HealthFair's dedicated and professional staff made me feel at ease. During my testing, the staff detected a 7.7 cm Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm which I had no idea was there and for which I had no noticeable symptoms. This was very scary because ruptured Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms are usually 90 percent fatal. Because of their findings, and the blessings of the Almighty, I was able to secure the necessary medical assistance and undergo a successful surgery on August 11th, 2004."

"I saw an ad for the mobile ultrasound tests a year before actually signing up to be tested. Unfortunately our friend in Vermont didn't have an opportunity to have these inexpensive tests and died of a ruptured aneurysm. Your seven-test package was truly an investment in my health."
